First Impressions Count in Dating

First dates are understandably nerve-wracking. There is very little time to make a good first impression and if you fail to make a favorable impact initially, you know it is going to be an uphill battle to turn the date around. Whether you know your date already or if you have decided to take the plunge and meet someone new via an Internet dating site, you need to be prepared emotionally and physically for a meeting that could just change your life.

Planning the date ahead will stand you in good stead. You want to have a few options in mind so that when you meet up you can decide then where to go. If you are regularly chatting at this point, it can be good to do this in advance and to plan to go somewhere that you both find appealing. If you have had very little contact and are meeting cold, then it is much safer to meet in a public location for a couple of hours until you know a little more about your date.

Internet dating is hugely popular and it is possible to meet that special someone but go into Internet dating with your eyes wide open because sadly, until you meet and get to know someone properly, you don't really know who you are talking to online. You can find out a great deal through email but it is not the same as meeting face to face. People still form impressions online so make sure that you come across as cheerful, positive and fun to talk to. It is very easy to pour out all your emotions and bad experiences to someone that you have never met but in the first instance, allow your positive nature to shine through.

So what can you realistically expect from your first date?

The most that you should hope for is that you will spend a pleasant period of time with someone. Obviously, deep down you may be hoping that there will be an instant and mutual attraction but it can take time for this aspect to develop and ideally, your first date should be about exploring common ground and not just hoping for some physical chemistry to appear.

Importantly, when you first meet you will know if your date does not appeal to you on any level. This can be really disappointing but always go with your gut instinct when you meet someone. If you have prepared your mind for this eventuality, you will be able to mask this realization and just enjoy the date for what it is. If you think back to your teenage years, you will remember just how many dates you potentially had before finding someone special. If you are encountering the dating scene second time around then you will have to prepare yourself to be patient.

With experience comes expectation, and you will be looking for very different things in a relationship if you have recently broken up with someone. With the best will in the world, you will want to ensure that you try to avoid making the same mistakes or choosing someone who is unsuitable for you. It can be difficult to not let your past relationships colour your future romantic liaisons but if you can enter any date with a clear and open mind and take your time to assess and make your own first impression without any external influence.

The moment you set eyes on your date, you will know if an initial attraction is there. It might be that you like their smile or the way their eyes sparkle when they smile. Sometimes a date just goes well from start to finish but at other times, things just trigger off a negative response in you. It can be the smallest thing that can put you off your date and sometimes you are not even sure why.

Are you confident when you meet someone new? Can you hold a conversation on just about anything? Making a good first impression is about engaging the other person and holding their attention. Play to your strengths. Dress well and dress for appeal. You are not just making the effort for them but for your own personal satisfaction too. It's not all about looks of course but making an effort will provide extra confidence and if you feel good, you will be more relaxed in their company and this will enable your personality to shine.

Most importantly, be yourself. This might sound obvious but people do try to fake it when they first meet up but this is pointless. It's important that you feel comfortable with the person that you are and this will appear an attractive quality to those that you meet. Enjoy each first date and see it as an opportunity to meet someone new and experience new things en-route to your eventual romantic success.
